Confection

This morning I glanced involuntarily at TV, NHK educational program, it introduced the Japanese culture in English*1.

Today's theme was "wagashi". I found the english word 'confection'.

Ordinary english dictionary tells us the Japanese word "kashi" means snack, sweet, cake, and so on. But I have uncomfortable feeling since before. Surely "kashi" includes snack, sweet, cake, but it also includes other type of things.

For example, "monaka" is one of the "kashi", but it's not a snack, it's not a sweet, it's not a cake.

That's the confection.

*1:The english program is "Trad Japan". A little too high level for me. :-(
